How did the westward movement impact American Indians?
They lost land, independence, and culture
What were the primary motivations (consider economic, political, and social reasons) for America’s territorial expansion during the late 19th and early 20th century?
Economic: Sugar plantations in Hawaii, trade control in the Panama Canal, and trade with China.
Military: Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii
Political: Stability in Latin America, power and control over the Western Hemisphere

everyone could buy Native American’s land

the president had to break up reservation land
What was the Reservation System?
where natives could reserve some land to be able to be independent and govern themselves. but the land was very small compared to where they used to live
What happened at the Indian Residential Schools?
Native children were being taken away by force, or parents “willingly” gave them away to boarding schools where they were taught English and converted to Christianity. They were also given American names and haircuts.
What happened in the Plains Wars?
It was a series of conflicts between native tribes and white settlers because the white settlers kept moving west
What was the Battle of Little Bighorn?
The native tribe was given a deadline by the U.S. government to move off the land and into reservations, and the native tribes who weren’t out before the deadline was being moved by the Army, but later they defeated General Custer and his army
What was The Wounded Knee Massacre
Native Americans did a Ghost Dance to attempt to resist westward expansion and in turn, the U.S. army arrested Lakots tribe leader Sitting Bull, then this huge fight broke out and hundreds of Native Americans were massacred.
Why was the U.S. interested in Hawaii?
They wanted their sugar plantations so they could make more money and also established the Pearl Harbor U.S. Naval Base.
Who were Yellow Journalists?
They were journalists who exaggerated or sensationalized stories like the terrible conditions in Cuba
What is Jingoism?
extreme nationalism or superiority of your country
What happened in the Philipphine-American War?
America wanted to take control of this country so that others wouldn’t. It was a four-year-long war. Once the war was over, America changed their culture entirely and converted them to Christianity, had English become the primary language, and shipped American teachers to the Philippines.
What was the Treaty of Paris 1898?
The U.S. gained the Spanish territories of Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico.
What is the Plat Amendment?
The U.S. wanted to maintain influence and control in Cuba because they wanted fruit, sugar, and tobacco.
