Unit 5 Flashcards
Haploid
A cell with 1 set of chromosomes, n
Diploid
A cell with 2 set chromosomes, 2n
What is crossing over?
crossing over in prophase I occurs when nonsiter chromatids exchange segments, this results in recombinant chromsomes
Mendel’s Law of Segregation
states that alleles are segregated into separate gametes during meoisis
Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment
states that genes are not linked
Monohybrid
examines the inheritance of one trait
Dihybrid
cross exams the inheritance of two traits
Pedigrees
show inheritance patterns within families
Nondisjunction
is the failure of chromosomes to fully separate during the formation of gametes, can lead to too many or too few chromosomes in sex cells
Random Fertilization Leads to
genetic variation in offspring of sexually reproducing organisms
What are linked genes?
genes located close together on the same chromosome
What are sex-linked traits?
traits influenced by the genes on the sex chromosomes
What is phenotypic plasticity?
the ability of the same genotypes to produce different phenotypes due to enviornmental conditions
