Unit 5 Flashcards
Skinner’s vision of behavior analysis
Recognize that although behavior analysis has flourished in one tale of the distribution of human concerns, it has yet to
have a mainstream role or relevance and that this is grossly
inconsistent with Skinner’s vision.
Behavior Pediatrics in Primary Care
The application of behavioral analysis and
developmental psychology to child behavioral
problems presenting in primary care settings
Emphasis of Behavior Pediatrics
Prevention over cure or rehab
Types of Interventions used in Behavior Pediatrics
Supportive health education and prescriptive treatment
3 domains of care in behavior Pediatrics
•Common behavior problems
•Behavior problems with significant medical
(biological) dimensions
•Medical (biological) problems with significant
behavioral dimensions
Relevance of behavioral problems in behavior pediatrics
•Approximately 50% of all primary care child visits involve behavior problems. •High frequency, low intensity problems •Responsive to prescriptive behavioral treatments
How Children Learn
Repetition with contrast (change in experience)
- Quality determines direction of learning
- Quantity determines how much repetition needed
Crying
#1 cause of child abuse 2/6 hours a day in early infancy
Toilet Training
Parents often don’t know when children are
ready for toilet training, and don’t have
successful methods for effectively toilet
training, thus leading to issues.
Discuss at least five examples of targets for
prescriptive treatment in behavioral pediatrics
in primary care.
These include toddler
misbehavior, bedtime resistance, simple habits,
defiance in older children, and simple phobia.
Interventions
•Time-out procedure for touching unsafe items
•Bedtime pass (DRA + extinction)
•Contracting and “reminder fluid” for thumb-
sucking
•Job-based grounding for older children (less aversive, child controls when it ends, parents don’t have to nag, chores get done)
•Exposure and incentives for insect phobias (study done with math calculations and exposure plus incentive)
Anxiety
suppression of operant behavior
Male Fertility and Behavior Analysis
•Sperm concentration is a primary
determinant of the probability of pregnancy
•Sperm concentration is declining in the US
Male Fertility- Relevant to Behavior Analysis
Relevant to behavior analysis?
–Sperm are organisms that behave
–Their behavior occurs in an environment
–That environment exerts strong influence on
sperm behavior (heat)
–That environment is changeable (boxers or briefs)
Littering
-Effort influences amount of littering
