Unit 4: Wk 1 Flashcards
What 3 things do radiographic images require?
- x ray beam source
- pt
- x-ray film
Basic equipment components of radiographic image
generation of xrays in xray tube
beaming xrays to pt

-
Radiodensity
combination of a tissue’s physical qualities (composition and thickness) that determine how much radiation it absorbs from the xray beams
Radiographic density
the amt of blackening on the radiograph
Radiolucent
easily penetrates by xrays
Radiodense
increased radiodensity (appears more white)
Radiopaque
not easily penetrated by xrays
What are the 4 major radiodensities?
Air - black
Fat - grey black
Water - grey
Bone - white
What are voluntary and involuntary factors that affect the image quality recorded detail (sharpness)
Voluntary: pt squirming
Involuntary: peristalsis in gut
Which imaging technology should be used first and what are the factors that affect this decision?
Routine radiographs: established series of radiographs that provide the most visualization of anatomy with least exposure to radiation
Use ACR Appropriateness criteria to decide if imaging is needed and what should be done first
If you have a serious trauma patient come in, what type of imaging do they need?
CT Scan
Interventional radiology definition and examples
Invasive or surgical radiology
- fluoroscopy !! MOST COMMON
- catheters, needles, cannulas, balloons, stents
- vascular: angioplasty, thrombolysis, chemo infusion
- nonvascular: biopsies of lesions, abscess drainage, screw placement
Why do PTs need knowledge about imaging?
Bc it’s associated w/ improved patient management and cost containment
Info we seek is different than physician; it may not be in the report
What should PT be able to do with diagnostic imaging information? In terms of decisions, reasoning, screenings, and communication?
- recognize when imaging is needed to complete a comprehensive exam
- integrate info from radiologists written report into the PT treatment plan
- understand the image for info that may not be in written report
- communicate effectively abt imaging w/ other professionals
Where do PTs have the ability to refer patients for diagnostic imaging?
NOT FLORIDA- ITS PROHIBITED
- Wisconsin is the only state that allows it
