Republic
A Republic is a system of government where (some) citizens have the right to vote, and where the leader is elected, rather than a monarch.
Patricians
The patricians were wealthy landowners who became Rome’s ruling class
Plebeians
The plebeians were simply commoners. In this group were less wealthy landowners, small farmers, craftspeople, and merchants.
Consul
Two Consuls were chosen every year to run the government and lead the Roman army into battle.
Roman Senate
The Roman Senate was a group of about 300 patricians who served for life.Their role was to advise government officials.
Law of Nations
Law of Nations established standards of justice that applied to all people, regardless of citizenship.
Punic Wars
The Punic Wars were a series of wars between 264 and 146 BC fought between Rome and Carthage.
Triumvirate
A triumvirate is a government by three people with equal power.
Age of Augustus
The Age of Augustus was an age of peace and stability, brought on by Augustus’s political and economic reforms during his rule.
Pax Romana
A period of peace and prosperity for Rome that began with Augustus.
Gladiator Games
Gladiator games often involved two trained combatants fighting to the death in front of a large audience.
Polytheistic
They worshipped multiple gods and goddesses.
Persecution
Persecution is to harass or harm in order to cause suffering.
Edict of Milan
Official tolerance of Christianity.
Inflation
A rapid increase in prices.
