Assistive Device
Devices that allow a person to perform ADL related tasks they would not otherwise be able to perform. Examples include walkers, canes, handrails, grab bars, wheelchairs, etc.
Adaptive Equipment
A type of assistive device that is adapted or modified to help with any task associated with ADL’s.
Body Mechanics
Correct use of muscles and positioning of the body to prevent injury.
Body Alignment
Positioning of the body to decrease strain on body structures.
Chain of Infection
Process of events that cause infectious disease to be spread from one person to another.
Contaminated
Dirty or soiled; containing germs (microorganisms).
Contagious (Communicable)
A infection that can be spread from one person to another.
Disinfect
Using a cleaner or chemical (disinfectant) to kill most germs.
Gait Belt (Transfer Belt)
A device placed around a resident’s waist to provide support while transferring or walking with a resident.
Germ (Microorganism)
A microscopic organism including bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Hand Hygiene
Washing hands with soap and water or applying hand sanitizer.
Hand Sanitizer
An alcohol containing solution designed to be rubbed into the hands to reduce germs.
HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Host
Plant, animal, or human that harbors microorganisms.
Infection
The invasion of the body by a disease-causing microorganism (pathogen).
Infection Control
Practices that prevent the spread of infection.
Intact
A term used to refer to the skin that is unbroken with no cuts or open areas.
Isolation
A special mask that is fitted specifically to a healthcare worker to protect them against airborne diseases.
N95 Respirator
A special mask that is fitted specifically to a healthcare worker to protect them against airborne diseases.

Practices to prevent the spread of infection such as hand hygiene and disinfecting equipment.
Microorganism
A microscopic organism that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Pathogen
A microorganism that causes disease or infection.
Physical Restraint
Anything near or on the body which restricts a resident’s freedom of movement.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Special clothing or equipment worn for protection against infectious disease. Includes gown, gloves, face-masks, face shields, goggles, etc.
Safety
Practices that prevent harm or injury.
Sputum
Mucus coughed up from the lungs.
Standard Precautions (Universal Precautions)
A special process used to destroy all microorganisms on equipment or surfaces
Surgical Asepsis (Sterile Technique)
A special process used to destroy all microorganisms on equipment or surfaces.
Transmission
To pass or spread pathogens from one person or place to another.
