Unit 4; Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is an autotroph?
Producers: these organisms make their own food by turning inorganic molecules into organic molecules
What is a heterotroph?
Consumers: these organisms obtain food by eating others
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
LIGHT+6CO2+6H2O—> C6H12O6+6CO2
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which organisms transform light energy into chemical energy
Why do humans depend on photosynthesis?
Oxygen, food, oil, fuel, wood, and cotton
What is a monosaccharide?
A single sugar molecule
What is a disaccharide?
Two glucose molecules linked together
What is a polysaccharide?
Many glucose molecules linked together
What is the palisade mesophyll?
The layer where most of the photosynthesis takes place
What is the lower epidermis ?
This structure transports water and nutrients
What is the stoma?
These tiny pores facilitate gas exchange
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplast. The light reactions occur in the thylakoid and the Calvin cycle occurs in the stroma.
What is the phloem?
Networks in the leaf that send sugars from the leaves down to the roots
What is the xylem?
Networks in the leave that carry water from the roots of the plant to the leaves
What is the thylakoid?
Little discs inside the chloroplast that absorb light energy
