Q
Jute - India
A
- The East India Company sent samples of jute to Britain to see if the fibre could be used, and in Dundee this was combined with whale oil and the city’s expertise in producing cloth to make it into a useable material in hessian.
- This impacted Scotland because the success of this led to the new jute industry which benefitted Dundee’s economy heavily and created new jobs.

Q
Locomotives - New Zealand
A
- In 1903 the North British Locomotive works was formed by three Glasgow based engine building companies, and with their ability to produce 600 locomotives every year the company produced one quarter of the steam locomotives used by New Zealand.
- This impacted Scotland because profits for this company would go beyond relying on just the demand for locomotives in Scotland, meaning they earned more money which would therefore allow their business to prosper and give back to Scotland.
4
Q
Hospital - India
A
- Money from India found its way to Scotland due to the generations of Scots emigrating to India to seek their fortunes, and this was used to fund the development of Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin.
- This impacted Scotland because it was important for Scots to have healthcare establishments, and the money sourced from India meant that this did not hinder Scotland’s economy - it would be purely advantageous.
5
Q
Vocabulary - India
A
- Words learned in India came back to Scotland and became common use, such as ‘bungalow’ which derives from bengal - this was where British families would go to escape heat in the plains of India.
- This impacted Scotland because such examples show that the empire was important in expanding Scottish vocabulary and therefore an aspect of Scotland’s culture.
6
Q
Agriculture - New Zealand
A
- Other areas of the empire developed their own agriculture industries, like in New Zealand where the New Zealand and Australia Land Company sent the first ever consignment of frozen meat from New Zealand to London in 1882.
- This impacted Scotland because industries like this acoss the empire became serious competitors for Scotland, which would contribute to economic issues like a loss of profit for Scottish producers.
7
Q
Fortunes - Empire
A
- The empire enabled some firms and individuals to make great commercial fortunes, such as William Weir in coal and iron.
- This impacted Scotland because these now wealthy Scots invested their profits at home by building mansions in suburbs like Broughty Ferry in Dundee.
