Q
Prime Minister
A
- John A McDonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada and during his 18 years of service he pioneered ensuring Canadian independence from the USA.
- This impacted Canada because he was instrumental in making Canada an independent country which was not controlled by another, something which has remained to this day.
3
Q
Pacific Railroad
A
- George Stephen, a Scottish financer at the bank of Montreal, financed the Canadian Pacific Railroad, and the main engineer of this product was Scot Sandford Fleming.
- This impacted Canada because the railway spanned 3700 miles and connected areas of Canada that had previously been cut off from each other.
4
Q
University Curriculum
A
- Scottish Immigrants, like William Jack, brought over the practical subjects taught in Scottish universities to the Canadian education system.
- This impacted Canada because the education curriculum was broadened which increased Canadianβs opportunities.
5
Q
McGill University
A
- McGill university was founded in 1821 with money from the estate of James McGill, a merchant and politician who had emigrated from Glasgow.
- This impacted Canada because more education institutes allowed for more Canadians to receive further education and experience what had been brought over from Scotlandβs curriculum.
6
Q
Farming Techniques
A
- Scots, particularly from the Highlands, brought over new farming techniques which they had learnt in Scotland due to coming from farming families.
- This impacted Canada because these techniques had positive effects on farming, such as crop rotation helping to improve and increase crop yield.
7
Q
Fur Trade
A
- The Hudson Bay Company, whose trading posts stretched for thousands of miles, hired many Scots from Orkney due to their experience and skill in trapping animals.
- This impacted Canada because the fur trade within this company could not have succeeded without the experience of Scots, so they could profit and bring new material to Canadians.
