Q

Education

A
  • Education became available to all Scots from ages 5 to 13 under the 1872 education act but good quality schools were found in larger cities.
  • This pulled Scots to move as they wanted to access better education up to university level, in places like Aberdeen.

Q

Social Life

A
  • In rural lowland areas of Scotland social lives lacked variety and many lived in very basic conditions.
  • This pulled Scots to move because the Highlands offered leisure and entertainment opportunities such as pubs, more recent national newspapers and radio stations which made their lives more exciting and helped with the work-life balance.

Q

Railway Boom

A
  • The railway boom of the 1840s developed railways around Scotland, which made it easier for Scots to move around the country. The invention of the steamship also allowed for migration to be quicker, easier and cheaper.
  • This pulled Scots to move as migration seemed less risky, was more achievable and could easily be temporary if things didn’t go to plan.

Industrial Work

A
  • Industrial cities like Dundee offered jobs within factories, such as the Jute factories, ideal for Highlanders in need of work.
  • This pulled Scots to move as landowners faced great financial pressure from funding famine relief funds, so their solution was to replace Highlanders with sheep and cattle which caused them to lose their jobs and accommodation.

Q

Tenement Buildings

A
  • Industrial cities such as Glasgow offered tenement buildings, which were often dire but in better condition with more to offer in comparison to housing arrangements elsewhere in Scotland.
  • This pulled Scots to move as they found this to be a better alternative to Blackhouses, which lacked windows and chimneys and were shared with animals which led to diseases like typhus spreading.

Q

Football

A
  • The Scottish National Football League became a huge attraction of city life, as this became an achievable weekend hobby for young people.
  • This pulled Scots to move to the Highlands, particularly young farmers, as they craved social opportunity beyond their work which they didn’t find particularly attractive.
