George Washington
First president of the United States. Had to set various precedents for future presidents.
John Adams
Had a very mixed administration and had to deal with chaotic international affairs. France does the “XYZ Affair” leading to a quasi-war with France. Also passed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, which limited freedom of speech and allowed deportation of people who originate from a country hostile to the US.
Thomas Jefferson
A democratic-republican. President during Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the United States.
James Madison
Tried to balance the needs of both the anti-federalists and the federalists.
James Monroe
Britain held US sailors captive leading the US to declare war on Britain (War of 1812). Declared Monroe Doctrine, prohibiting European countries from colonizing the Western Hemisphere.
