French and Indian War
The French and Indian fought the British for lands West of the Appalachians. Colonists were forced to quarter soldiers and fight against the French.
Proclamation of 1763
Colonists were furious when the Proclamation of 1763 prohibited them from settling on the land the fought for, West of the Appalachians.
Salutary Neglect
British loosely enforced laws against the colonies leading to self-governance in the colonies.
Sugar Act
England is in debt from the French and Indian War so they began imposing taxes on colonists. The first is on sugar and molasses.
Stamp Act
Passed 1 year after the Sugar Act, imposing taxes on papers, cards, and other printed goods.
Townshend Acts
Even more taxes imposed on colonists. It taxed various items such as tea, glass, paper, paint, and more. The slogan “No Taxation Without Representation” began to become popular.
Tea Acts
Colonists forced to purchase tea from the East India Company.
Boston Tea Party
Colonists began to protest the Tea Act by dumping multiple chests of tea from the East India Company into the Boston Harbor.
Intolerable Acts
Colonists receive a series of taxes and punishments for the Boston Tea Party. Tensions arise and the First Continental Congress meets.
Battle of Lexington and Concord
“Shot heard around the world”
First battle of the revolution. Americans won the battle.
Battle of Satatoga
Turning point of the war and motivated the French to join and support the Americans.
Battle of Yorktown
Last major battle of the American Revolution. American victory, British general captured.
Treaty of Paris 1783
America gains freedom.
America is recognized as a country.
American gains land up til the Mississippi River.
