Jamestown
The first permanent settlement in North America established in 1607.
John Smith established it and John Rolfe brought tobacco to save the colony.
Tobacco
A green, leafy cash crop which thrives in humid conditions. Very important in the development and survival of Jamestown.
Pilgrims and Puritans
Pilgrims and Puritans left from England in search of religious freedom. They set off on the Mayflower and landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Mayflower Compact
Created by the Pilgrims in 1620, it was one of the first forms of self-governance in the New World, setting the path for other documents.
Mercantilism
When a Mother Country exploits its colony for raw materials to maximize its income.
