War of 1812
The US declared war on Britain and Canada was brought to the front line to support and help Britain. The war was caused mainly by trade disputes.
Confederation
Any league or union of people or bodies of people. Generally confined to a permanent union of sovereign states for common purposes.
Federalism
Mode of political organization where separate states come together based on a similar political system that allows each to maintain its own integrity.
Settlement of the West
Canada started to settle in the west for the purposes of transportation, homesteads, and work. All of this contributed to an immigration boom.
Charlottetown Accord
It attempted to resolve long standing disputes around the division of powers between federal and provincial jurisdictions.
Meech Lake
Meech Lake accord was recognition of Quebecs distinct character. It was intended to persuade the government of Quebec to endorse the 1982 constitutional amendments.
Referendum
A direct vote by the electorate on a proposal, law, or political issue.
Equalization Payments
Cash payments made in some federal systems of government from the federal government to sub national governments with the objective of offsetting differences in available revenue.
Regionalism
The practice of regional rather than central systems of administration or economic, cultural, or political affiliation.
Bilingualism
Someone’s ability to be able to communicate in two languages.

Multiculturalism
A belief, doctrine, or policy that embraces the idea of ethnic or cultural diversity and promoted a culturally pluralistic society.
Diversity
A range of people with various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
Cultural Pluralism
A belief or doctrine that holds that collectives should be encouraged to affirm and promote to their unique cultural identity in a diverse society.
