Canada’s Goal

Peacekeeping
Sent to conflict areas after the fighting has stopped, they are negotiated by the Security Council of the UN, they just have

WHO
Created in 1948 as part of the UN, headquarters in Geneva, is used to prevent disease, inform people, and coordinate research.
World Bank
Founded in 1944 at Bretton Woods, originally called the The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, located in Washington.
International Monetary Fund
Founded in 1944 at Bretton Woods, main purpose is to stabilize currency, work closely with the WTO.
WTO
GATT- General Agreement on Trades and Tariffs was signed in 1948 (forerunner of the WTO), 1995 WTO was formed, works to reduce trade barriers and promote free trade, can impose sanctions and fines.
Right To Play
International humanitarian organization that uses sports and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in disadvantaged areas.
The Arctic Council
Works to resolve issues of those living in the north such as: environmental concerns, pollution, monitoring climate change, sustainable development, preserving indigenous language and culture, and arctic sovereignty.

Myanmar Case Study
Ruler by a dictator, the elected prime minister is under house arrest. Sun Kyi was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace.
Conflict in Afghanistan
Taliban power under Osama bin Laden was training people for terrorist attacks, after 9/11 bin Laden was not turned forward so the UN intervened. NATO is head of military operation there. Canada is participating in support of ally, USA.
Conflict in Darfur Region
Located in Sudan, many problems over the years in this area. The African Union tried to solve the problem with troops but was unsuccessful. UN declared it a genocide and there is currently a peacekeeping mission there.
General Assembly
Serves as main deliberative, policy making, and representative part.
Security Council
Ensures international peace and security. Deals with peacekeeping/peacemaking missions.
Economic and Social Council
Responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization.
Secretariat
Sets the agenda for decision making parts of the UN.
International Court of Justice
Settles disputes between states in accordance with international law and gives opinions on legal issues.
Trusteeship Council
Supervises the administration of trust territories as they transition from colonies into sovereign nations.
