Unit 4- Biomolecules Flashcards
What are the main functions of carbohydrates?
- Providing energy and regulation of blood glucose.
- Dietary fibre
- Sparing the use of proteins for energy.
- Breakdown of fatty acids and preventing ketosis.
List proteins and their functions.
Amino acids-A large proportion of our cells, muscles and tissue is made up of amino acids, meaning they carry out many important bodily functions, such as giving cells their structure.
Polypeptides-Polypeptides are chains of amino acids.
Lipids and their functions.
Lipids are storage compounds. Fatty acids are types of lipids and they are good for insulation.
What is the structure of DNA like?
It is mainly formed by Phosphorus and deoxyribose. It has the formation of a double helix.
Why is water important for living organisms?
The water acts as a solvent for chemical reactions and also helps transport dissolved compounds into and out of cells.
