Cells Flashcards
What is diffussion?
Diffusion is the net movement of molecules of a liquid or a gas from an area of high or low concentration as a result of the random movement of molecules.
What is osmosis?
Ósmosis is a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
What are the effects of osmosis on animal cells?
Animal cells don’t have cell walls so when osmosis occurs, the cell bursts open and after water diffuses out of the cell, the cell then starts to shrink.
What are the effects of osmosis in plant cells?
Plant cells have a cell wall but water enters and starts to swell. The cell wall prevents it from bursting, but the plant cell becomes turgid.
What factors affect the rate of diffusion?
- Temperature
- Density
- Concentration gradient
