What are two main hormones produced by the pancreas?
Glucagon and insulin
What is excess glucose stored at? And where
Glycogen, liver
What does the body do when more glucose is needed?
Glycogenolysis. Glycogen that is stored in the liver is converted back to glucose
What hormone is responsible for glycogenolysis?, where are they released from?
Glucagon, alpha cells of the islets of langerhans in pancreas
Where is insulin released from?
Beta cells of the islets in pancreas
What is diabetes?
Either deficiency of insulin, resistance of cells to insulin, or both
What is type 1 diabetes?
Autoimmune disorder where beta cells that distribute insulin are destroyed, leading to hyperglycaemia
What is type 2 Diabetes?
Body produces insulin but is poorly accepted by cells
How are dosages calculated to children and pregnant women?
By weight
