Unit 1 Flashcards
What is pharmaceutics?
The study about how various dosage forms influence the way in which the drug affects the body
What is pharmacodynamics?
What the drug does to the body
Pharmacokinetics?
What the body does to the drug
What are the components are pharmacokinetics?
Absorption distribution metabolism and excretion of drugs
What is bioavailability?
The extent of drug absorption in the body
What is the first pass effect? What drug absorption methods gave 100% bioavailability?
Reduces drugs bioavailability to less than 100%
IV
What happens when a pt is taking 2 or more meds that are highly protein bound? What does this lead to?
Meds compete for binding sites on the albumin protein, leads to more unbound free drug which can cause a drug to drug interaction
What is metabolism?
Biochemical alteration of a drug into a metabolite
What’s the organ most responsible for bio transformation?
Liver
What’s the primary organ responsible for elimination?
Kidney
What is drug half life?
The time it takes for the concentration of the drug in the body to be reduced by 50%
What’s the half life of a drug that peaked at 10 mg /L and the measured drug level in 8 hours is 50 mg/L.
8 hours
What is onset of action?
Time it takes for drug to initiate a response
What is peak effect?
Time it takes for drug to reach its maximum therapeutic effect
What is a drugs duration of action?
The time the concentration is sufficient to elicit a therapeutic response
What is mechanism of action?
The means by which a drug exerts its effects on cells or tissues
What are additive effects?
Results in total effects of both drugs
1+1=2
What are synergistic effects?
Occurs when the action of one drug enhances the action of another drug
What are antagonistic effects?
Combination of two drugs result in drug effects that are less than the sum of each drug
What is the nursing process for medication admin?
Assessment diagnosis planning implementation evaluation
