  • he was on his way to Damascus, when a bright light shone at him, he became blinded, but before being blinded he saw Jesus. In Damascus, a man named Ananias, healed Paul from being blind.

  • He was a Jew
  • born in Tarsus, Cilicia (Turkey), Asia Minor
  • Roman citizen by birth ( the ways to get a Roman citizen was to get it by birth, buy it, or be in the army for 25 years minimum)
  • > being a Roman citizen, Paul had the right to appeal his case to Caesar, in court. Also a right was that no Roman citizen was to be bound and whipped.
  • he spoke Greek( from tarsus), Aramaic(Jew), and he would have known Hebrew.

  1. He studied under Gamaliel in Jerusalem
    • Gamaliel was the most prominent rabbi of his day, Pharisee on the Sanhedrin
    a) Paul gained an expert knowledge of the Hebrew scripture through Gamaliel
    b) because of this, he grasp of the OT history and law aided his presentation of Jesus Christ as the one who had fulfilled the law.

A

Miracle: the sorcerer, Elymas, became blind, he was trying to turn proconsul away from the faith.
A lame man in Lystra was healed.
Persecution: the people thought the Paul and Barnabas were gods, so they tried to worship and sacrifice animals for them. When they refused, the people stoned Paul.
Major destination: Lystra, Antioch

Miracle: Paul healed a girl slave from a demon. She kept yelling out who Paul was and trying to make the people go against Paul.
Persecution: the slaves owners got Paul and Silas arrested and thrown in prison.

Timothy

His father was Greek and his mother/grandmother were Jewish

His mother/ grandmother taught him the scriptures. He was well-grounded and reliable
He was intimidated by his young age( 1 timothy4:12, 2timothy 1:6-7)
Timothy accompanied Paul to Macedonia, Philippi, thessalonica, berea when Paul continued to Athens, but left Timothy there to help the new Chruch plant
He invited Timothy to rejoin him in Athens and then sent him to thessalonica
After being released from prison, Paul sent Timothy to Ephesus to take care of the church there. He wrote Timothy a letter while he was in Ephesus telling him to follow the leadership of Jesus
Just before Paul’s execution, he wrote one more letter to Timothy. He encourages Timothy to stay faithful.
2 Timothy was seen as Paul’s last will and testament. It’s full of kindness and tenderness. He wants Timothy to corm to Rome and before winter and bring him the things he left in troas.
Timothy could have witnessed Paul’s execution. He returned to Ephesus and took lead of the church. He was martyred because he took a stand against their idolatry. Greeks commemorated his martyreddom on January 22.
