Official Church teaching: cloning
Against because it takes away from the sanctity of marriage, makes human making a business, and takes away from our uniqueness
Official Church teaching: stem cell research
Against embryonic, adults are okay
Culture of Life
A society that holds all life sacred from conception to natural death
Culture of Death
A society that does not hold life sacred in all its stages
Conscience
The interior voice guided by human reason and Divine Law that leads us to understand ourselves as responsible for our actions, and prompts us to do good and avoid evil
Euthanasia
A direct action, or lack of action, that causes the death of a person who is handicapped, sick, or dying
Excommunication
A severe penalty that results from grave sin against Church law. Either imposed by a Church official or happens automatically as a result of the offense
Suicide
Deliberately taking one’s own life
Racism
Treating people of a different race without the full respect their equal dignity requires
Official Church teaching: euthanasia
Against it: it violates the 5th commandment, serious sin against the sanctity of life
Roe v. Wade
In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states cannot limit a woman’s right to an abortion during the first trimester of her pregnancy
Official Church teaching: abortion
All human life is sacred and starts at the moment of conception, but the only exception is when it puts the mother’s life at risk
Official Church teaching: suicide
grave offense against the 5th Commandment; the person is making a decision that is God’s alone to make
Official Church teaching: Immigration/Migration
Church calls for elimination of the root causes of such migration, but says that countries have the right to protect their borders

a baby should be conceived only through the marital act

Catholics should be against it because God formed us but it’s okay with humans if it’s therapeutic or with plants, medicine, etc.
Materialism
a cause of the culture of death. When God is not the center of our lives, we often become preoccupied with material things, which leads to selfishness and the pursuit of pleasure as the primary goal of our lives

What does The Gospel of Life address?
identifies 2 causes of the Culture of Death: a distorted understanding of human freedom and materialism

lists sins against human life and dignity (ie: murder, genocide, suicide, etc.)

the U.S. bishops recognize that the life of the Church is enriched by its racial identity

identified 5 social justice principles that guide the Catholic perspective on migration and immigration issues: people have the right to find opportunities in their homeland, people have the right to migrate to support themselves and their families, sovereign nations have the right to control their borders, refugees and asylum seekers should be afforded protection, and the human dignity and human rights of undocumented migrants and immigrants should be respected
How can families play a role in building a culture of life?
We all should proclaim the Gospel, pray, serve others through works of charity, respect all people. Parents specifically must lovingly accept all children and teach them the gospel of life
How should we treat those with differing abilities? What can we learn from these people?
We are committed to ending discrimination against persons with disabilities, both in our Church and society. We can learn independence, joy, uniqueness, and much more from them
