Unit 4 Flashcards
What are light dependent reactions?
require solar energy ad use it to create ATP and NADH
How is P680 regenerated?
by photolysis of water by a z splitting molecule and this reduces the P680 and releases O2
What is the role of water in light dependent reactions?
to regenerate P680 by losing H+ and becoming O2
What happens in non-cyclic electron flow?
electrons enter and exit the pathway
What happens in cyclic electron flow?
electrons are returned to the beginning to go through the cycle again
What is the excitation of chlorophyll?
an electron in chlorophyll absorbs incoming photons and use the excitation energy to boost electron to an electron acceptor
What are pigments?
they are molecules that absorb certain wavelengths of visible light
What do photosynthetic pigments do?
they trap light energy and pass it to other compounds
What are accessory pigments?
they act as antennae and absorb wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot to absorb more energy across the spectrum
What are secondary Pigments?
they abrob UV wavelengths to protect the chlorophyll from high energy waves
What is the photocenters function?
- to absorb energy from photons and use it to excite electrons to an electron acceptor
- is part of the electron transport chain
How is ATP created?
when H+ is actively transported out of the cell through ATP synthase to synthesize ADP and Pi
How is NADPH created?
when NADP reductase releases H+ into stroma where it binds to NADP+ to form NADPH
What do dark reactions use?
ATP, NADPH both from light dependent reactions
What are the 3 phases of dark reactions?
- Carbon Fixation
- Reduction
- Reforming RuBP
