Unit 3 Flashcards
What is an exergonic reaction?
chemical reaction that releases energy
What is an endergonic reaction?
chemical reaction that requires emergy
What is a redox reaction?
they are coupled reaction where the atom that accepts electrons is reduced and the atom that loses electrons is oxidized (OIL RIG)
What is glycolysis?
a metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose to pyruvate
What is the citric acid cycle?
it gets acetyl CoA and oxidizes it to carbon dioxide. Also regenerates the compound that pick up more acetyl CoA and converts released energy to ATP, NADH and FADH2
Where does glycolysis occur and what is its function?
in the cytosol/cytoplasm and functiond to poduce pyruvate for pyruvate oxidation
Where does pyruvate oxidation occur and what is its function?
in the mitochondrial matrix and functions to produce acetyl CoA for citric acid cycle
Where does the citric acid cycle occur and what is ts function?
occurs in mitochondrial matrix and functions to produce ATP, NADH and FADH2
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur and what is its function?
occurs in inner mitochondrial membrane and functions to produce ATP
What is the function of NADH?
- it is an electron transport molecule
- it takes electrons through the ETC to create proton gradients
What is chemiosmosis?
- ATP generation using a proton pump/ diffusion of H+ atoms
- uses ATP synthetase to bring H+ into cell and synthesize ATP from ADP and Pi
What is ATP?
- molecule that is used directly for energy
- the 3rd phosphate is important because it is a high energy bond
What is aerobic respiration?
in the presence of oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
metabolic pathway that occurs without oxygen
What is fermentation?
Cellular respiration pathway that transfers electrons from NADH to an organic acceptor molecule
