Richard Hartshorne was a prominent American geographer, and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who was specialized in economic and political geography and the philosophy of geography.
Antecedent Boundary
Defined by areas where there is a break in the settlement
Subsequent Boundary
The boundaries occur as the cultural landscape evolves
Placed after population evolves
pays more respect to cultural landscape then superimposed boundaries
Mostly based on war and conflict
Super-imposed Boundary
Boundaries forgeable drawn across a unified cultural landscape
Relict Boundaries-
A border that ceases to function but it’s imprints are still evident in the cultural landscape
Geometric Boundary-
Straight line boundaries that are totally unrelated to any cultural aspects
Physical-Political Boundary-
Boundaries to confirm physiological features
Cultural-Political Boundary-
Boundaries that mark breaks in the human landscape
Compact States-
A country where is is equal distance from the center points
Fragmented States
A country that is broken up into many different islands or parts
Elongated States-
A country that is very long and narrow
Chile, Argentina, Italy.. ect
Perforated States
-A country that has other, separate states within South Africa (lesotho and malawi)
Enclave
A distinct territory culturally, enclosed within a foreign territory
Exclave
A territory that is separated from another country by another territory
Prorupt States
A country that has a section of itself sticking out
State Morphology-
The shape of a state can either help that state, or present a problem
Boundaries drawn that don’t coincide with the cultural landscape can cause conflict
Shatter belts
An area of instability between regions with opposing political and cultural views
Balkanization
An area or place where political boundaries could/can constantly change based on ethnic groups or conflict
Unitary State-
A state governed as one single unit in which the central government is supreme and any administrative divisions, that exercise only powers that their central government chooses to delegate. The great majority of states in the world have a unitary system of government.
