Unit 3.2 and 3.3 Ionic and Covalent Flashcards
Ionic Bonds are made from ___________
Ions!
What type of elements create Ionic Bonds?
A metal and a nonmetal:
ex: sodium + chloride
what kinds of ions are formed by metals?
positive ions
what kind of ions are formed by nonmetals
negative ions
What side of periodic table loses electrons?
left side (1+)
What side gains electrons?
Nonmetals (1-)
What are the 7 diatomic elenents?
Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, and Iodine
Are ionic bonds stronger or weaker than covalent?
Ionic bonds are stronger because they transfer electrons instead of sharing them
What are the properties of ionic compounds
- Melting point is high, takes long
- Solubility- they dissolve EASILY
- Conductivity: solid compound can’t but the dissolved solution does
• Brittleness: High bc of crystal lattice, ions of same charge repel
What are properties of covalent bonds?
- Low melting points, bc of weak bond
- Solutiblity: some but not all dissolve
- Conductivity: most dont conduct electricity
why don’t covalent bonds create a charged particle
The Atoms SHARE valence electrons so they need more energy which causes a weaker bond
What would be the oxidation number of sodium+ iodine?
Ionic, sodium would become positive (1+) and chlorine would gain one electron (1-)
How many atoms and elements are in C^2O^4
atoms: 6
elements: 2
How many atoms are in C^3H^4Al^2
9 atoms!
How are crystal lattices arranged?
they are alternating protons and electrons
What happens when an ion is 3+
that atom loses 3 electrons
What happens when an ion is 6-
that atom gains 6 electrons
True or False: ionic compounds are likely to have a crystalline structure at room temperature
True
True or false: substances that are gases at room temperature are always ionic
false
True or false: ionic compounds are made of nonmetals bonded to nonmetals
false
True or false: Jane left a candle in her car on the warm day. she later noticed that the candle him melted and the wax was all over the seat. James candle is mostly made of covalent bonds
True
self and acids are used in a car battery. sultan acids must contain ionic bond since they are great conductors
True
ionic bonds are held together do to the attraction of the oppositely charged ions
True
The force of attraction between bonds in molecules is much stronger than the bonds between oppositely charged ions in a crystal lattice. True or false:
false
True or false: PO is a molecule
True
True or false: the chemical formula for tryptophan is CHNO. this is a covalent bond
True
A covalent bond is made up of_____________
Molecules
what happens if sodium is 1+ and chlorine is 1-. what does this mean
this atom is a NEUTRAL atom
are halogens in group 17 reactive
they are very reactive nonmetals
is group 18 reactive
no, noble gases arent reactive because the already have 8 valence electrons
what is the chemical name of C^2N^4
Carbon tetranitrogen
