3.1 and 3.2 Key Notes Flashcards
What does APE stand for?
Atomic # = Proton # = Electron #
What are Protons?
Postive charged particles
In the nucleus, 1 AMU
What are Electrons?
Negative Charged
In Electron Clouds
less than 1 AMU
What are Neutrons?
Not charged
In nucleus, 1 AMU
What is an ION?
of Electrons and Protons are not equal
*They are negatively charged when electrons outnumber protons and vice versa
What is an isotope?
an atom that has same number of protons but different number of neutrons as OTHERS IN THE SAME ELEMENT
What is the atomic mass vs. mass?
Atomic mass= weighted average of masses (on table)
Mass: protons plus neutrons
What are Periods/Rows?
elements of each row have the same # of energy levels!!!! ROWS GO ACROSS
What are Groups/Columns?
elements have the same number of valence electrons!!! GROUPS GO DOWN
What are valence electrons?
Valence Electrons are located in the OUTERMOST LAYER
Valence E’s determine how an element will react with other elements
Group 1: Alkali Metals and
Group 2: Alkine Earth
Very reactive, hydrogen NOT included!
They need to share or lose only 1 to 2 electrons to have an outer level filled
What does M A N stand for?
MASS - ATOMIC # = Neutrons
