Unit 3.1 Flashcards
What does agricultural production depend on?
Factors that control photosynthesis and plant growth
Increased food production will depend on?
Use of fertilisers, pests and disease
Explain why livestock produces less food per unit that crop plants
Less energy is lost between tropic levels.
Where is livestock production possible
In habitats unsuitable for growing crops
Why is light absorbed By photosynthetic pigments?
To generate ATP for photolysis
What is the absorption spectrum?
Shoes true range and extent to which light wavelengths are absolute by a pigment
What is the action spectrum?
Shows the rate of photosynthesis of a plant at each wavelength
What do carotenoids do?
Extend the range of wavelengths absorbed and pass the energy to chlorophyll for photosynthesis
What does the absorbed light do?
Excited the electrons in the pigment molecule.
What happens in the ETC
Released energy to generate ATP by ATP synthase.
Uses of energy
For photolysis, split water, and to transfer hydrogen ions to the coenzyme NADP
Stage 2?
Carbon fixation
what happens to CO2
The enzyme RuBisCO fixes it by attaching it to RuBP to produce 3PG
What happens to the 3PG
It is phosphoralated by ATP and combined with H to form G3P.
What does G3P do?
Used to regenerate RuBP and to synthesise glucose
