Unit 3 Vocab Test Flashcards
The geometric mean of two
positive numbers is the square root of their product.
It is used to find the mean proportional in geometric sequences and the altitude in right triangles.
Geometric mean
A right triangle with two 45-degree angles and one 90-degree angle, where the legs are congruent. It is a special case of the isosceles triangle.
45-45-90 triangle
A right triangle with angles measuring 30, 60, and 90 degrees, where the sides are in a specific ratio (1:3:2). It is a special case of the right-angled triangle
30-60-90 triangle
In a right triangle, the ratio of the length of the side opposite an acute angle to the length of the hypotenuse. It is a fundamental trigonometric function.
Sine
In a right triangle, the ratio of” the length of the side adjacent an acute angle to the length of the hypotenuse. It is a fundamental trigonometric function.
Cosine
In a right triangle, the ratio o the length of the side opposite an acute angle to the length of the side adjacent to the acute angle.
Tangent
A transformation that flips
figure over a line, creating a mirror image. It is a type of rigid transformation in geometry
Reflection
A transformation that slides a
figure in a specific direction for a certain distance. It is a type of rigid transformation in geometry
Translation
A transformation that turns a figure around a fixed point. It is a type of rigid transformation in geometry.
Rotation
A comparison of two numbers by division. It is used to express the relationship between two quantities.
Ratio
An equation stating that two ratios are equal. It is used to solve problems involving equivalent ratios
Proportion
Polygons with the same shape but not necessarily the same size. They have proportional corresponding sides and congruent corresponding angles.
Similar polygons
The ratio of the lengths of two corresponding sides of similar polygons. It is used to determine the relationship between corresponding sides of similar figures.
Scale factor
A transformation that changes the size of a figure, but not the shape. It
involves multiplying the coordinates of the original figure by a scale factor.
Dilation
If a line is parallel to one side of a triangle and intersects the other two sides, then it divides those sides proportionally. It is used to find proportional segments in triangles
Triangle proportionally theorem
