Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States, in effect from 1781 until 1789.
Northwest Ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 established a framework for governing the Northwest Territory, outlined a process for admitting new states, protected civil liberties, and prohibited slavery in the territory, while also allowing slaveholders to reclaim escaped enslaved people.
Great Compromise
The Great Compromise, also known as the Connecticut Compromise, resolved a key issue during the 1787 Constitutional Convention by creating a bicameral legislature with a Senate offering equal representation to each state and a House of Representatives with representation based on population.
Three-fifths Compromise
The Three-Fifths Compromise was an agreement made in 1787 to count three-fifths of slaves toward a state’s total population.
