Unit 2: American Revolution Flashcards
People make their own country
Proclamation of 1763
The Royal Proclamation of 1763, issued by King George III after the French and Indian War, established a line along the Appalachian Mountains, prohibiting British colonists from settling west of it, and reserving that land for Native Americans.
Consent of Governed
A government’s legitimacy and authority stem from the people it governs, not from divine right or other sources.
Intolerable Acts
A series of punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party, aimed at punishing Massachusetts and restoring British authority.
Declaration of Independence
A document that announced the separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain in 1776.
Unalienable Rights
Unalienable rights, as famously articulated in the Declaration of Independence, are inherent, meaning they are not granted by any government and cannot be taken away or given away.
