Unit 3- Transport Systems In Plants And Animals Flashcards
What are two vessels that flowering plants have?
Xylem, phloem
How is the xylem suited to its function? How is the phloem suited to its function?
Xylem: has no valves to allow more water to pass through.
Phloem: has valves to make sure the food is going the right way
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from the plant
What is the circulatory system for?
To get food and oxygen to every cell
What are the two circulatory systems for?
1) Carrying oxygenated blood to the organ
2) carrying deoxygenated blood back to the lungs
What are the four main parts of the heart?
Right and left atrium, right and left ventricle
What are the 3 types of blood vessel? What do they do?
Arteries- carry blood from heart
Capillaries- exchange substances at the tissue
Veins- carry the flood to the hear
What does haemoglobin react with oxygen to make?
Oxyhemoglobin
What do white blood cells do?
Change shape to Engulf pathogens, they produce anti-bodies and anti-toxins.
What do platelets do?
Cause the blood to clot, keeps microorganisms out and the blood in
What is plasma?
A liquid that carries everything in the blood.
What is a negative of having a heart transplant as oppose to an artificial heart?
An artificial heart is less likely to be rejected.
What are stents?
Small plastic tubes to keep arteries open
What do root hair cells you to transport water? Where does it get the energy?
Active transport, respiration
