Unit 2- Proteins, Their Functions And Uses Flashcards
What are enzymes? And what are they made out of?
They are proteins which are made from amino acids.
Name two functions that enzymes do?
They either split or join substances.
What happens to an enzyme if the Ph or temperature is too high?
The bonds holding the enzyme break and it becomes denatured.
Name 3 digestive enzymes? And what do they do?
Protease, lipase, amylase, they break down large molecules into small molecules.
What does amylase do? And where is it stored?
Converts starch into sugars. Found in the small intestine, pancreas, salivary gland.
What does protease do? Where is it formed?
Converts proteins into amino acids. Formed in the stomach, pancreas and small intestine.
What does lipase do? Where is it found?
Converts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids. Found in the pancreas and small intestine.
What does bile do? Where is it produced?
Neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats. In the liver
What do salivary glands produce?
Amylase
What enzyme does the stomach produce?
A protease enzyme called pepsin.
What will increasing the temperature do?
Speed up the reaction but also speed up an unwanted reaction.
