Unit 3 Topic 5 - Food Production Flashcards
Fertiliser…
Is added to the soil to improve plant growth by replacing the lost nutrients
Pesticides…
Are used to kill insects/pests that would eat the crop if left untouched
Herbicides…
Are used to kill weeds that would compete with the crop for water, sunlight space, etc.
Describe the nitrogen cycle
plants need nitrogen to make protein but plants can’t use atmospheric nitrogen directly so they absorb it through the ground in the form of nitrates. nitrogen is recicled through the nitrogen cycle.
What are the 5 main forms of nitrogen?
• plant protein
• animal protein
• ammonia
• nitrItes
• nitrAtes
What is bioaccumulation?
the build up of substance in tissues of a living organism often resulting in organ failure/death
What do fertilisers contain to help increase crop yield?
Nitrates
