Unit 2 Topic 1 - Producing New Cells Flashcards
What is stage 1 of mitosis?
The parent cell’s neucleus contains single stranded uncoiled chromosomes, 2 sets from each parent - diploid
What is stage 2 of mitosis?
Chromosomes shorten and thicken, coil up and become visible. Each chromosome replicates to form 2 identical chromatids and the neuclear membrane breaks down
What is stage 3 of mitosis?
Chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell and spindle fibres attach to the chromatids
What us stage 4 of mitosis?
Spindle fibres shorten to separate the chromatids pulling them to opposite poles
What is stage 5 of mitosis?
The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and the cytoplasm starts to divide, new neuclear membranes start to form
What is stage 6 of mitosis?
The cell splits and two new daughter cells are formed both diploid and identical to the parent cell
What is mitosis needed for?
Growth and repair
