Unit 2 Topic 5 - Transport Systems In Plants Flashcards
Name the components of a leaf
• cuticle
• epidermis
• palisade mesophyll
• vein
• lower epidermis
• spongy mesophyll
• stomata
What is the function of a waxy cuticle?
A waterproof layer to minimise water loss
What is the function of the upper epidermis?
To protect the inner layers of cells, is transparent to allow light through
What is the function of the palisade mesophyll?
The top layer of cells packed tightly together, contains many chloroplasts for photosynthesis
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll?
Cells are arranged loosely with large air spaces between them to allow for diffusion of gases between cells
What is the function of the leaf vein?
Contains the xylem and phloem, to allow sugar and water to be transported in and out of the leaf
What is the function of the stomata?
Pores which are opened and closed to allow gases to move in and out
What is the function of guard cells?
Found on either side of the stomata and change their shape to open or close the pore
What is the function of the lower epidermis?
Contains guard cells and small pores called stomata which allow gases in or out
What does the xylem do?
Transports water and minerals from roots to the leaves
Is xylem dead tissue or living tissue?
Dead tissue
What do phloem do?
Transports sugar to all parts of the plant
What is the structure of a xylem?
Has a hollow tube and a spiral of lignin
What is the structure of a phloem?
Contains sieve plates, sieve tubes, companion cells and end walls
