unit 3 topic 1 - localisation of brain function Flashcards
(40 cards)
What does the central nervous system consist of
the brain and the spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of
all the somatic and autonomic nervous systems.
What is the role of the somatic nervous system
controls voluntary movement of the skelatal muscels
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system
Responsible for automatic and involuntary movement. Usually a response to threats (fight-flight-freeze)
What is a reflex
A reflex is an unconscious response to our environment to keep us safe
what are the two types of spinal reflexes
monosynaptic reflex arc and polysynaptic reflex arc
What is a monosynaptic reflex arc
A reflex that only contains ONE space for an action potential to travel between a sensory and motor neuron
What is a polysynaptic reflex arc
A complex reflex that contains MORE THAN ONE connections between neurons
what are the functions of the frontal lobe
Thinking, planning, organising and problem-solving
What is the function of the motor cortex
movement
What is the function of the sensory cortex
Processing sensations
What are the functions of the parietal lobe
Perception, making sense of things
What is the function of the occipital lobe
vision
What are the functions of the temporal lobe
Memory, understanding, and language
What is the role of Broca’s area
involved in the production of speech
What is the role of Wernicke’s area
Involved in speech processing and understanding language
What is the role of Geshwind’s territory
Connects Broca’s area to Wernicke’s area
What is the role of the basal ganglia
Receives information from the motor cortex and controls the gathering of information
What is the role of the primary motor cortex
Movements of skeletal muscles
What is the role of the cerebellum
Stores sequences of movements and communicates with the primary motor cortex
What does the limbic system consist of the
Amygdala, hypothalamus and midbrain areas
What is the role of the limbic system
in charge of memory, emotion, behaviour and motivation.
What is the role of the hippocampus
Helps with emotional regulation.
What is the role of the hypothalamus
controls our basic survival actions, such as creating stress and the fight-flight-freeze response.
