Ascribed Role
Social identity that was given based on uncontrollable factors
Achieved Role
Social identity that has been earned or chosen
Minority Influence
When the majority accepts the beliefs of the minority
Attitude
Set of emotions, beliefs, & behaviors toward a particular thing
Mere Exposure Effect
A preference for familiar things over unfamiliar things
Central Route to Persuasion
Logic-driven arguments that use data & facts to convince people of an argument’s worthiness
Peripheral Route to Persuasion
Indirect route that uses peripheral cues to associate positivity with a message
Cognitive Dissonance
Psychological state of having ideas or perceptions that are inconsistent, does actions that goes against beliefs
Door-in-the-Face Compliance
Strategy to start with a large request in order to make a small request seem reasonable
Foot-in-the-Door Compliance
Strategy where you ask for something small first, but ask for something bigger later
Low-Ball
Cost is originally small, less than the value to get an agreement once the price increases drastically
Norms of Reciprocity
Requires that people repay what acts of kindness others have done for them
Attribution Theory
Deals with the casual factors to which successes and failures are attributed to
Self-fulfilling Prophecy
Idea that beliefs can influence behaviors, making the belief seem more true
