What is a Microsleep?
A microsleep is a brief involuntary period of sleep that occurs in the midst of a wakeful activity - we tend to drift off and stop concentrating on what we are doing.
What is Partial Sleep Deprivation?
Partial sleep deprivation is having some sleep in a 24 hour period but not getting enough to meet your needs; may occur for just one night or for several nights and can lead to serious consequences.
What is REM Rebound?
REM rebound is the significantly larger amount of time spent in REM sleep than usual that follows a period of being deprived of REM sleep.
What is a Sleep Debt?
A sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount of sleep you actually get.
What is Sleep Deprivation?
Sleep deprivation is not getting the amount of sleep needed; may involve partial or total loss of sleep.
What is Sleep Deprivation Psychosis?
Sleep deprivation psychosis is the experience of being depersonalised with a loss of sense of personal identity and increased difficulty with coping with other people and the environment. It usually occurs at day 6 of total sleep deprivation.
What is the ‘Hat’ Phenomenon?
The ‘hat’ phenomenon is s feeling of tightening around the head as though a hat that is too small is being worn that usually occurs during day 4 of total sleep deprivation.
What is Total Sleep Deprivation?
Total sleep deprivation is going without sleep for an entire 24 hour period; may occur for just during one night or for servers like nights and can lead to serious consequences.
What is Chronic Sleep Deprivation?
Chronic Sleep Deprivation is long term sleep deprivation where an individual has not been getting enough sleep over an extended period of time.

Drooping eyelids Lethargy Difficulty focussing eyes Increased sensitivity to pain Difficulty in thinking clearly Hallucinations/delusions Hand tremors

Depleted energy resources
Fatigue and lethargy
Delays in repairing and recovering tissues
Disruptions in body temperature regulation

Loss of attention and alertness
Slowed cognitive responses (ie. Reaction time)
