Abuse
Anything offensive, harmful, or injurious to an individual that can pose a direct safety threat.
Accidents
Incidents that occur at random and maybe avoidable.
Intentional injuries
Result from deliberate acts of violence or abuse and often have fatal consequences. Ex: Suicide and Homicide.
The Joint Commission (TJC)
An independent not for profit group in the US that accredits hospitals and other healthcare related agencies; have a focus on the goal of patient safety.
Ambu bag
A resuscitator bag that is used to assist ventilation.
Bioterrorism
The release of biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes with the intent to cause illness or kill people, animals, or plants.
Carbon Monoxide
a colorless, odorless gas that can cause sudden illness, and death.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS)
The federal organization that certifies all medicare and medicaid participating hospitals.
Physical Restraint
A mechanical or physical device such as material or equipment attached or adjacent to the patient’s body, preventing free movement by the patient.
Chemical Restraint
Medication that is administered to a patient to control behavior.
Electrical Shock
When a person comes in contact with an energy source and it flows through the body to the ground.
Suffocation
Results when air no longer reaches the lungs and respiration ceases.
Falls
Events in which an individual unintentionally and through the force of gravity drops to the ground, floor, or some other lower level.
Lead Poisoning
A public health issue: Occurs when lead levels build up in the blood over months or years and it can affect all body systems.
Poisoning
Involves the intentional/unintentional ingestion, inhalation, injection, or absorptions through the skin of any substance harmful to the body.
R.A.C.E.
R: Rescue all pts. in immediate danger, and move them to safe areas.
A: Activate the manual pull station or fire alarm, and have someone call 911.
C: Contain the fire by closing doors, confining the fire, and preventing the spread of smoke.
E: extinguish the fire if possible after all patients are removed from the area.
Safety
The condition of being free from physical or psychological harm and injury is a global concern.
Toxins
Substances that can poison or harm individuals or other living organisms through mechanisms such as ingestion, inhalation, and dermatologic exposure.
Unintentional Injuries
Results from incidents such as falls, motor vehicle crashes, poisonings, drownings, fire-associated injuries, suffocation by ingested objects, and firearms.
Unintentional poisoning
An act in which the person didn’t mean to inflict harm by taking or giving the substance; This includes an inadvertent overdose.
