Why is worship in special places?
A building designed for worship has special features to aid worship, this include Large majestic shapes Symbols and artefacts Images/pictures Open space Music Silence
What is a font?
The baptismal font is used for christenings. It’s near the front door to symbolise becoming part of gods family through baptism
What is the lectern?
This is used for reading the bible and is often shaped like an eagle to symbolise gods world being carried around the world
What is the pulpit?
This is a raised platform from which the vicar will preach a sermon. It is raised so everyone can see him/her clearly and to show that the word of God is important
What is the alter?
The place that symbolises God meeting hid people in bread and wine at Eucharist. It is at the front of the church, the most holy part of the sanctuary
What are the rules of behaviour in a church?
- no talking during the sermon or bible readings
- no eating in the main church building
- make sure phones are turned off and men remove hats
What’s a calligraphy?
Decorative writing is used in Islam because pictures of people and animals are not allowed as this is believed to be idolatry
What is a wudu area?
The mosque will contain a special area to allow Muslims to carry out wudu, special ritual washing, before they pray

A raised platform for the imam to lead prayers from
What is a minaret?
This is a tall tower. Many mosques throughout the world use the minaret to broadcast the call to prayer
What are the rules of behaviour in a mosque?
- it’s important to show respect when attending the mosque
- take off shoes before entering so as not to take dirt into a sacred place
- men and women sit separately
- wudu must be preformed before prayers
- people face towards Mecca when praying
What happens in a mosque during the week?
- children have Arabic classes so they can learn to read the qu’ran
- there are prayers every Friday
- weddings, funerals, special services and private devotions take place when necessary
