What is a font?

A

The baptismal font is used for christenings. It’s near the front door to symbolise becoming part of gods family through baptism

  • Christians want people to become Christian or Muslim want people to become Muslims so their differences are too great and they will never agree with each other
  • faith is often the cause of problems rather than the solution eg Northern Ireland
  • when it comes down to the key points eg how could you get to heaven different faiths cannot agree so no real process is made

What are arguments against interfaith dialogue is a waste of time

A
  • many different faiths have a lot in common eg desire to care for the poor and needy. Dialogue (talks) could help them do this and they could achieve so much more together
  • Islam and Christianity have a similar moral code. In today’s society which is increasingly secular (non religious), faith groups need to work together to lobby parliament eg issue of euthanasia
  • talks between key religious leaders can help prevent racial tensions and unrest. This was seen after the 7/7 bombings

What do Christians believe about symbols?

A
  • Christians can choose whether or not to wear special clothes or symbols
  • some wear a symbol eg across or fish to show other people which religion they belong to and therefore as a way of sharing their faith
  • church leaders may wear special cloths because it helps church goers to have faith in their leaders judgment
  • priests wear robes to conduct ceremonies because it shows that they have gods authority to do it eg when taking a Eucharist
  • symbols and robes help to remind people that the occasion is holy and they are in a holy peace

  • many Muslims show their commitment to their faith by wearing special clothe s
  • free flowing clothing for men and women is seen to be modest. Islam teaches against wearing tight fitting clothing
  • special clothing is worn for prayer. Women will wear a hijab. Men will wear a hat
  • when Muslims go in pilgrimage they wear the ihram (2 white unsewn sheets) to show that everyone is equal before allah

A

The believe all humans have a dignity and respect. The worlds resources should be shared equally and humanity should respond to suffering with compassion . They are motivated by the teaching in the bible, esp. To love your neighbour

What are examples of CARFOD

  • HIV and AIDS - they educate people to prevent the spread of the disease. AIDS is a major cause of death in developing countries
  • when natural disasters hit they provide shelter, food, medicines, mosquito net, drinking water etc

This charity works internationally to alleviate suffering. They believe Muslims should put their faith into action following the teachings of the Quran and the exams,e of the prophet Mohammed.

  • murder is always wrong and against goes teachings
  • two wrongs don’t make a right
  • if you make a mistake you can’t put it right
  • capital punishment leaves no room for the criminal to be reformed or make amends fir what they have done

  • it is only real deterrent to stop the worst crimes
  • if you can take a life, why should you be allowed to continue living
  • it gives the victims family a sense that justice has been done

  • generally against capital punishment because of teachings such as the Ten Commandments
  • capital punishments does not allow for the Criminal to be reformed
  • Jesus taught compassion, not revenge
  • however the Old Testament taught eye for an eye this means that some Christians would argue in favour of capital punishment and the ultimate protection of Society

  • two crimes are seen seriously enough for the death penalty. These are murders and openly attacking Islam
  • In the Quran Muslims are forbidden to take a life because Allah has created it, accept for just cause
  • in Islam the victims family has the right to pardon the offender

Who is the prophet Mohammed?-

A
  • the prophet Mohammed was born in 570CE in Mecca where there were many corrupt practices happening
  • as a young man he showed concern for justice by becoming a member of a group to protect the safety rights of strangers
  • after the revelation of the Quran to the prophet, there are many examples of him speaking out against corrupt practices eg he showed respect for women amd disagreed with the killing of female babies which was common in his day

  • the queen helps select the Archbishop of Canterbury

  • In this country there is little link the state with Islam. However, some countries are called Islamic state. In these countries Islamic law is exercised
  • Iran is an Islamic state. Shariah law is based on the Quran and the sunnah

Who is Oscar Romero?

A
  • Oscar Romero was ordained as a priest in the Catholic Church in 1942
  • he became archbishop of El Salvador
  • in the 1960s there was a lot of crime amd corruption in El Salvador. Some people were very wealthy but most were very poor. Originally he decided not to speak out against the corruption he was
  • then his friend was murdered, so he decided he had to speak out. He held meetings that were banned by the government
  • after many threats oscar was killed by government soldiers who burst into the cathedral and shot him while he was celebrating communion on March 24th
