Q

What is Euthanasia? When did Canada make it legal? What is the Church’s position on this issue?

A

what is it: The practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering.

more in depth: The painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma.

when it became legal: On February 9, 2015 the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously struck down the ban.

churchs position:
the Church states
(2277) “Direct euthanasia consists of putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.”
(2278) “…the use of painkillers to alleviate the sufferings of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable.”
-SO BASICALLY.. they’re “against” it and believe its a violation, an offense against human dignity and attack on humanity
