Unit 3 pyruvate oxidation Flashcards
What is pyruvate oxidation?
brings and oxidates pyruvate into the mitochondra
pyruvate –> acetyl-CoA
what are the steps of pyruvate oxidation?
enters outer membrane:
enters inner membrane (cristae):
1. decarboxylation:
2. dehydrogenation( redox reaction)
3. Coenzyme
enters outer membrane: diffusion
enters inner membrane (cristae): active transport
- decarboxylation: CO2 is removed
- redox reaction: NAD–> NADH Hydrogen is taken from pyruvate
- Coenzyme: CoenzymeA is added product is made (acetyl-CoA)
What is the ratio of pyruvate and NAD to acetyl-CoA an NADH and Hydrogen and CO2
pyruvate : NAD –> acetyle-CoA : NADH : H : CO2
pyruvate : NAD –> acetyle-CoA : NADH : H : CO2
2 : 2 : 2 : 2 : 2 : 2
How does the pyruvate get through the outer vs inner membrane of the mitochondra?
Outer: passive transport
diffusion through pores
Inner: active transport
w/pyruvate translocase
