Contrastive
speaker sees two sounds as different. Allophones of separate phonemes. different meanings.
Free Variation
two different ways to say the same word. Allophones of same phoneme, doesn’t change the meaning.
Complimentary
Sounds do no occur in same environment. predictable. allophones of same phoneme.
Wider distribution
the letter/allophone that is more stable
