First Great Awakening
A religious revival. Churches mainly focused on the rich people instead of the people who needed help.
Enlightment/ Age of Reason
A philosophical movement among educated people. It emphasizes reason and observation to build a better society.
Constitutionalism
Rights cannot be protected unless they are written down.
John Locke (1632-1704)
The early enlightenment. His philosiphy connects to the EBOR (English bill of rights)
1.All people have rights.
2. The reason of government is to make sure everyone’s rights are protected. To keep order in society.
Tabula Rasa
Blank slate.
ex: When a baby is born noble or poor that does not define them. We become who we are based on experience. All people are born with Tabula rasa!
Life, Liberty, and Property
Was a main idea by John Locke.
- in which every man has property (which even meant physical bodies)
If government does not live up to protecting the rights it is justifiable to overthrow the government
Natural rights
We can figure out Human behavior. It is possible to be a better society. Theories about building a better society.
French and Indian War, 1754-63
French: Iriquois (Native Americans) and 5 native American tribes fought
Indian:
-Britain and the 13 colonies
** The British win… they had fought over the western territory***
Proclamation Line of 1763
British kick the French out. Fighting began to rise against British colonies and Iroquois Native Americans.
leads to the king of England to set up a proclomation line… which temporarily set a wester boundary for the 13 colonies*
Taxation without representation
The colonies had been taxed Britain taxes without represetaion for the colonies to go against it. Which was against there freedom overall.
Tyranny
Cruel & oppressive government and rule.
Virtual representation
The members of the parliament are elected, they won’t be focused on the specific district but focus on much more broader things.** How it affects Britain and the English colonies**
Direct Representation
Citizens vote directly that represent them. That representative is supposed to pay special attention to the needs of the people in the district.
