Unit 3: Investigative Biology Flashcards
Causation
When changing the independent variable causes the effect noted in the dependant variable
Confidence intervals
A range within which the actual value should lie
Correlation
When two variables seem to be connected
Error bars
Drawn in a graph to show the spread of data around the mean
Mean
This is the arithmetical average. Add all the values and divide by the number there are
Median
This is the middle point from the range of values
Mode
This is the most common value in a set of data
Negative correlation
As one variable is increased, the other variable decreases
Parasite load
A measure of the number of parasites found within the host
Placebo
A substance which has no therapeutic effect
Plagiarism
Copying another person’s work or views and passing them off as one’s own
Plankton
Microscopic organisms found living in freshwater or salt water
Positive correlation
As one variable increases, the connected variable increases too
Qualitative data
Information that is observed and presented as a description
Quantitative data
Information that can be measured and is usually presented as a number
