The Oregon Trail
Major trail to the Oregon territory. Settlers traveled for months. Many died of disease. By 1844, nearly 5,000 had arrived in Oregon
Treaty of Fort Laramie (1851)
provided many Native American nations with lands east of the Rocky Mountains, in return the Natives and forts. The U.S. pledged to honor the treaty. But U.S. government repeatedly violated the treaty, forcing many tribes onto reservations.
