Unit 3 Genetics Flashcards
Gene
is a heritable factor that consists of a length of DNA and influences of DNA and influences a specific characteristics
locus
is the place on the chromosome where a gene is located
Alleles
are a various specific forms of a gene
Mutation
is a change to the structure of a gene caused by the alteration of a single base units in the DNA. A mutation may be inherited by subsequent generations, or may affect only the individual in which it occurs. Mutations can be caused by exposure to radiation or carcinogens, or by errors in replication or transcription
Single nucleotide polymorphisms
are caused by point mutations that give rise to different alleles containing alternative bases at a given nucleotide position within a locus
