Unit 3- Further Analysis And Quantitive Chemistry Flashcards
What do flame tests identify?
Metal ions
What is the weird way you remember the flame test?
licrimson lik nay car air bag
How do you test the metal content of a compound?
Clean coil of wire with acid and boil it, dip into compound and put in flame
What do metals form when reacted with sodium hydroxide?
Precipitates: Calcium2- White Copper2- blue Iron2- green Iron3- brown Aluminium3- White to colourless Magnesium2-White
How do you test carbonates for CO2?
Bubble carbonate through lime water if it goes cloudy CO2 is present
How do you test carbonates for halides?
Add dilute nitric acid to the carbonate, add silver nitrate.
Chloride- White precipitate.
Bromide- cream
Iodide- yellow
How do you test carbonates for sulfate ions?
Add dilute HCL, followed by barium chloride solution
White precipitate of barium sulfate means compound was a sulfate
If a substance is an ionic compound what will it have?
A positive and negative part
