Unit 3 - Forces 2 (Friction, Air & Water Resistance, Streamlining) Flashcards
A force that opposes movement
Friction
A force arising when objects are touching e.g. Friction
Contact force
A substance used to reduce friction
Lubricant
A variable in an experiment that affects the outcome – the independent variable is changed in the experiment and is usually plotted on the x-axis of a graph.
Independent variable
The variable that is measured in an investigation – the dependent variable is usually plotted on the y-axis of a graph.
Dependent variable
The factors kept constant in an investigation
Control variables
The results would be obtained again even if carried out by other people with other equipment
Reliable
A reduced likelihood of harm or damage
Safety
The frictional resistance when something moves through the air
Air resistance
The frictional resistance when something moves through the water
Water resistance
The final constant speed that a falling object reaches – it occurs when the forward force (weight when falling) is exactly equal to the resistive force (usually drag or air resistance).
Terminal velocity
A very small part of material such as an atom or a molecule
Particle
To hit against something else
Collide
Having a form that presents very little resistance to a flow of air or water
Streamlined
To form an idea of the amount, number, or value of something
Evaluate
